Operation Highwall: Indo-Pacific patrol ships HMS Spey and HMS Tamar
Two River-class patrol ships left Portsmouth in September 2021 and have been continuously deployed in the Indo-Pacific for five years. The Royal Navy says their patrol area runs from the east coast of Africa to the west coast of the US, though they are typically found in Southeast Asia and the western Pacific. Recent activity includes the Five Power exercise Bersama Lima 2026 in October, a South China Sea passage by Tamar with an Australian frigate in late August, and Tamar joining the US-led Pacific Partnership in Malaysia. A Navy Lookout report says no date has been announced for either ship to return permanently to the UK. The 2025 Strategic Defence Review is described as calling them a permanent UK presence in the region.
